quotesposterous http://quotesilike.posterous.com A few years back, I started a file of all the things I read that jumped out at me, for whatever reason. Wisdom, insights, humor worth remembering and thinking about. I realized later that they are also snapshots of me, and where I was at the time in my life. posterous.com Mon, 23 Apr 2012 19:15:04 -0700 Parked near art http://quotesilike.posterous.com/parked-near-art http://quotesilike.posterous.com/parked-near-art

Days are getting shorter

“You do get to a certain point in life where you have to realistically, I think, understand that the days are getting shorter, and you can’t put things off thinking you’ll get to them someday. If you really want to do them, you better do them. There are simply too many people getting sick, and sooner or later you will. So I’m very much a believer in knowing what it is that you love doing so you can do a great deal of it.”

"Maybe people could learn from it (an upcoming documentary about The Mekons) – that music doesn’t have to be this short dash to the finish line, where you either get the bag of cash or you don’t. It can be whatever you want it to.

Jon Sharpe, in an essay called: Why don’t you just switch off your television set and go and do something less boring instead?

...for as much as we may respect the artist who solipsistically toils to no avail towards a lonely end, most of us harbor a prejudice that a comedian is truly a comedian only if people laugh, a writer if people read, a musician if people listen, a photographer if people look. We feel that audiences can exist without content but that content isn’t really content without an audience. Audiences motivate us to create, and their feedback motivates us to continue to do so.

Wed, 15 Dec 2010 10:44:00 -0800 from Resisting Gravity: a post about information overload http://quotesilike.posterous.com/from-resisting-gravity http://quotesilike.posterous.com/from-resisting-gravity
I just watched a TedX talk (Diana Laufenberg: How to learn? From mistakes) and one of the points made was how in the past, you had to go somewhere (the schoolhouse) to get information. Now of course, information is everywhere. But I find there’s still a distance you have to travel to get information, and while it’s not a physical distance, it’s a barrier nonetheless. I find what stands between me and information (and inspiration and learning) is quantity. There is so much competing for my attention every day that at this point, the biggest obstacle I face is distraction. From Red Sox news to facebook to the myriad quick hit blogs, I am constantly lured away from content with more substance. So I’m challenging myself to resist this in a new way. I will take 20 minutes out of every work day, close my door and all the other windows on my computer, and focus on a Ted talk. I know I’ll be glad I did, and the rest of the world, Red Sox included, will still be waiting for me when it’s over.

Tue, 02 Nov 2010 14:55:00 -0700 from an interview with Maira Kalman in Design Sponge http://quotesilike.posterous.com/from-an-interview-with-maira-kalman-in-design http://quotesilike.posterous.com/from-an-interview-with-maira-kalman-in-design

Substitute "whatever you are most passionate about" for "illustrating" in the answer below.

In a sentence, what advice would you give to young, aspiring illustrators? What was the best advice you ever received?

Maira Kalman: The best advice I ever received was “keep working” and “never never never give up.” That was actually said by Winston Churchill. Not to me of course, but still. That is the only advice I can give. If you actually like illustrating, find a way to do it, even if you need to have other work to pay the bills.

Little Feat’s Waiting for Columbus was one of those recordings I used to love on vinyl but for some reason, had totally forgotten about. Recorded over three nights in 1997, it is one of the great live recordings ever made. So good I ordered the actual CD. In the liner notes there’s a story about the first track, Join the Band. After about thirty seconds of dead air, you hear the band all singing a capella. Turns out, the engineer in charge of the live recording had never heard the band’s music before the, but when he found out that they did this before every show, on the last night, he decided to mike the stairwell they walked onstage, singing. It’s amazing, and the crowd roar as the first Feat member goes on stage always gives me a chill. What a great way to get ready to play.

Interestingly, it turns out that off-stage, nothing was working for the group, and they broke up soon after. According to Bill Payne who played keyboards, “things were still exceedingly tense, but for that period of time, everybody was running on all cylinders.” Sadly, it didn’t last. “What broke up the band was the fact that we were getting less and less of that excitement that comes from playing great as a unit....the big question became whether we felt we could get up there and believe in what we were doing.”

I sometimes wish there was a way we could focus on the excitement of what we’re doing and forget all the rest. Short of breaking into song, of course. Suggestions welcome.

Here’s Join the Band. Be patient. The first :30 or so are very hard to hear. PG
